The proper storage container for coffee beans is crucially important so the beans will stay as fresh as long as possible, or of course that yummy cup of coffee will not be perfect!
Coffee beans work best when there is no light. Metal or plastic can actually contaminate the taste. Use a dark cupboard if using glass. Make sure the coffee bean storage container is airtight. Coffee beans that are roasted actually contain gas. So, every day just let out the gas by airing out the container. One great option is valve storage bags. They can be expensive to use. But, it lets the gases escape and the oxygen will stay in.
If coffee beans are at room temperature, they will last around one to two weeks. The beans should be roasted in whole coffee bean form. A great option for this is to use Ziploc freezer bags for coffee bean storage. Just freeze the coffee beans but do not refreeze them again. Make sure all the air is of course out the bag. Or use a freezer container that is airtight.
When grinding the coffee, do not defrost the beans. A lot of people will use storage containers for coffee beans in the freezer as it does keep them a lot fresher. Do not grind the beans and then store in the freezer. It will not work. Just make sure to label what type of coffee beans they are. If you have flavors or strengths, it would be important to not mix them up.
If you want to do a lot of grinding, then store the coffee in an airtight container that is plastic like Rubbermaid or OXO is a great choice. Remember to keep it out of the light and always airtight. Never let moisture into the coffee. Also, never store coffee beans in the refrigerator. It can pick up smells and absorb the food items and that is so not tasty.
