K Cup Coffee Review

A Review of Coffee People Donut Shop K-Cups

Many of us have Keurig coffee brewers; it is very nice to enjoy a cup in the morning. However, there are so many K–Cup coffee brands out there it’s a little difficult for us to choose from them. So I decided to do some research and find out what others say about the K-Cups they buy.

If you are a medium roast lover, you maybe want to try Coffee People Donut Shop K-Cups. 50 packs are just $22. The coffee is good quality and at an affordable price. Let’s see what others say.

“Tastes just like the coffee you would get at the Donut Shop!”

“The Coffee People Donut Shop roast delivers taste and flavor without being too robust for my early morning taste buds. I love it.”

“I tried it because of the price, but will likely stick with it now for the taste.”

“This is one of our regular K-Cups that I keep ordering. It’s not too bold and it doesn’t leave any bitter taste in your mouth”

“This tastes like the coffee in the Greek diners in NYC. Yummy. I also love the hassle free packaging – no plastic shrink wrap or tape like the normal 2 box K-Cup packaging.”

“This particular blend is a favorite of all the Keurig users in our home…and we have tried a lot of different blends! The Keurig system is unsurpassed in its ease and quality and this coffee is simply outstanding. Mild and wonderful. If you have a Keurig machine and haven’t tried this coffee…..DO!!! And this price is unbeatable. Auto delivery for me!”

“This coffee is delicious. I don’t like coffee that is too strong, like Starbucks, and this is just right for the morning. I would highly recommend this!”

Ok, enough flavor reviews. There is one problem and one note for the Coffee People Donut Shop K-Cups (50 pack). Both were discovered by consumers who also provided solutions.

Here is the problem: “These K-cups come too full and they tend to not brew properly. You can always tell when you got a bad cup because the grounds are so packed in the cup that the water doesn’t come out completely, and your cup of coffee will have less liquid than you are used to. Sure enough, when you go to lift the K-cup out of the Keurig for disposal, you will find it is very heavy compared to others. We also know this is a problem with Coffee People Donut Shop K-Cups only, because my husband drinks a different brand and never has this problem.

It doesn’t happen all the time, and I have found if I shake the K-Cup before putting it in the Keurig it happens less frequently, but it still happens.

I’ve tried ordering from Coffee People multiple times to see if it was a one time manufacturing glitch, but it appears every time I buy a box of their K-cups. I have a problem with 10-15% of them.

Fortunately, another brand is offering a donut shop coffee which I tried with this last order and I find it just as pleasing.”

The note is: “The description of this coffee uses the words “Medium Extra Bold” in its packaging as opposed to the two 24 box version, which led me to think there was now two DIFFERENT varieties of this Donut Shop coffee….so I ordered both, (wanted 98/100 anyway) but it turns out that both were the same. Amazon should correct that description and take out ‘Extra Bold’ so they match each other.”

Ok, so in one word, Coffee People Donut Shop K-Cups are mild, not bitter. If you like this type of flavor, I recommend this product. Once again, it is cheap and high quality; just be aware of the problem and the note.

Where to buy

As always, you can only find such a low price on Amazon. Personally, I always like shopping on Amazon for the price and quality. Here is the link to Buy It on Amazon.

Coffee Beans

A Comparison of the Top two Italian Coffee Brands: illy and LAVAZZA

Both Brands play important roles in the coffee industry. What I am doing here is just introducing their history, development and features briefly, so we can understand them better.

illy was founded in 1933 in the port city of Trieste in northeast Italy. Its founder was Mr. Francesco Illy. Mr Illy was an inventor and a leader in the coffee industry. He invented the first automatic espresso machine ‘illetta’ in 1935, replacing the old steam method with a new compressed air method. After World War II, control of the company was handed over to his son Ernesto Illy. Because he was a chemist with a PHD in chemistry, Ernesto Illy established a research laboratory in the company where many unique unique inventions and patents were later born.

In 1996, famous modern artist James Rosenquist recreated the illy image, using a bright red box with bold white「illy」text inside. The appealing, eye-catching new logo was designed to update the illy concept and to welcome in the new millennium century. Here it is.

LAVAZZA was founded in 1895 as a grocery store and gradually moved towards coffee being their only product. After a hundred years of development, LAVAZZA has become the world’s third largest coffee roaster and, with a presence in more than 80 countries around the world, annual sales volume is around 86,000 tons (140 million cups), with Italy making up 47% of the market.

Its founder was Luigi Lavazza who devoted his whole life to the coffee business. In 1895, Luigi Lavazza bought a small grocery store, Paissa Olivero, for 26,000 liras (about 20 dollars) in Torina, northeast Italy. This store was the seed of the LAVAZZA kingdom.

lavazza beans espresso cremoso

In those days, grocery stores played dual roles as producers and retailers. Luigi Lavazza bought fresh beans then roasted them according to the customer’s preference . Because Luigi liked roasting coffee very much, he soon fully mastered his roasting skills. After World War I, his three sons Mario, Beppe and Pericle retired from the army and joined the business. Luigi Lavazza then had the capacity to develop his business from retailer to wholesaler, which was a big step on the road towards his successful coffee kingdom.

In the late 70s, LAVAZZA introduced a very popular advertising campain: ‘The more you drink it down, the more LAVAZZA picks you up’. This catchy ad brought LAVAZZA into the European market and turned the company into a multinational corporation.

Both illy and LAVAZZA are very successful brands in the coffee industry. The main difference is that LAVAZZA sell their coffee mainly to home consumers. On the other hand, illy focuses on formulas, packaging and marketing for high-end consumers and restaurants. In northern Italy, you will often see an illy sign in local coffee shop, but you will rarely see a LAVAZZA sign.

As for the flavor, both company tastes are typical for espresso, and I don’t want to make any rash comments. illy use 100% Arabica coffee beans that are roasted relatively light and they choose beans with mild flavor and light acidity, so that illy coffee tastes sweet and smooth. On the other hand, LAVAZZA coffee notes are more typical of espresso, with a great balance of acidity and bitterness. It feels “stronger” to drink, almost like drinking strong alcohol. A small cup of LAVAZZA coffee can leave a long aftertaste.

The Best Iced Coffee Options

Compared with traditional hot coffee, iced coffee has become more and more popular among young people lately. On a hot summer afternoon, what could be more cool than a cup of iced coffee?

Basically you have 4 choices when it comes to iced coffee.

  1. Buy your cup from Starbucks
  2. Buy an iced coffee maker
  3. Buy Instant Iced coffee
  4. Make it at home by yourself

I think there is no need to explain the first method, we all can do it: pay the money, get your coffee. So let us move on to the next choice – an iced coffee maker. You can buy a coffee maker with an iced-beverage function or buy an ice coffee maker, which is specifically used to make iced coffee.

For a general coffee maker with an iced-beverage function, I suggest you check out the Breville Bkc700XL Gourmet Single-Serve Coffeemaker with Iced-Beverage Function. However, I don’t want to buy an expensive coffee maker for $200 just to make iced coffee. That is unless the coffee maker I have breaks, in which case I will look for this function when buying my next coffee maker.

In fact, I really like those cheap, cute little machines that are just for making iced coffee or cold brewing only. There are a bunch of them out there. For 30 dollars you can pick up a good brewer such as the Hario V60 Iced Coffee Maker. Watch the video below to see how it works.

Another option is the Toddy Cold Brew System. Watch the video below to see how this coffee maker works.

The 3rd choice is also popular because it is cheap and easy. As I have said before, is the best place to buy things like instant iced coffee. Amazon is cheap, high quality and sells some products you can’t get at local stores. If you need some instant iced coffee suggestions, some good options are the Cappucino Coolers French Vanilla, Starbucks iced coffee, Maxwell house iced latte and so on. Have a look for yourself; they are easy to find. In fact, instant iced coffee is my favorite way of drinking iced coffee in the summer. It isn’t the best brewing option for flavor, but sometimes we don’t just concentrate on flavor.

If you are ready to make iced coffee at home, it is best to start with the easiest recipe. All you need is coffee, sugar and ice. Things you have to pay attention to are:

Adding more ground coffee than you usually do. For example, if you use one tablespoon for your hot coffee, use 2 tablespoons for iced coffee.

If you want to add sugar, add it when the coffee is hot. When the water cools down, the sugar won’t dissolve as well.

Don’t pour hot water directly over ice. Leave it to cool for a while or you will end up with a weak and flavorless iced coffee. If you watched the Hario V60 video, you will have seen that the coffee maker has ice in the middle section. This is a fast and convenient solution for cooling coffee down faster, without ruining it by pouring it directly over ice when it is still hot or waiting for hours to let your coffee cool down in the summer.

For other recipes choices, it is easy to search for homemade iced coffee recipes online. I am sure you will find plenty of options as well if you want to pick up an ebook so that you can read it when you are not online. Check out some other home brewing options such as Moka Pot and French Press brewing on this site.

Coffee Joulies – Keeping Your Coffee HOT

I came across an article in Gizmag today which I found interesting and I wanted to share this really great product with you.

Unless you’re someone who drinks their coffee fast, you likely face a bit of a conundrum when it comes to temperature – either you start with your coffee at the perfect temperature which ends up getting cold, or you have to let it cool down to the perfect temperature by starting with coffee that is too hot. Two young entrepreneurs, however, have created a product that they claim quickly cools your hot coffee to the right temperature, but then keeps it at that temperature twice as long as normal. Their product is called the Coffee Joulie.

Mechanical engineers Dave Petrillo and Dave Jackson grew up together in New Jersey, but have since ended up on opposite sides of the U.S. That hasn’t stopped them from collaborating on the Coffee Joulies design over the past nine months.

Each Joulie contains a proprietary, non-toxic phase change material that is sealed within a polished stainless steel shell. The product is placed at the bottom a coffee mug (or other container), to which hot java is then added. The secret internal material is designed to melt at 140F (60C), absorbing heat energy from the coffee as it does. This reportedly allows the Joulie to cool coffee three times faster than normal.

Once the Joulie has cooled down past 140 degrees, however, it starts to solidify again, thus releasing the energy it stored while melting. This is what keeps the coffee warm for twice as long as a non-Joulified beverage.

Best results are obtained with a covered, insulated container, while heat-absorbing ceramic mugs offer the poorest performance. Users need to experiment with different amounts of Joulies and/or with pre-heating them, depending on the size of the container and whether or not an individual cools their coffee by adding cream.

Needless to say, the product does take up room that would otherwise be occupied by liquid. It pretty much comes down to a question of coffee quantity versus coffee temperature.

The two Daves have been making limited numbers of Coffee Joulies by hand, but are currently trying to raise funds to start automated production at an existing silverware plant. They are doing so by offering Joulies in exchange for pledges on the Kickstarter fund-raising website. $40 will get you five, $100 will get you five Joulies with a custom Thermos travel mug, and the $500 Coffee Shop Pack will score you 20 sets of five.

A Guide to Burr Coffee Grinders

Burr Coffee Grinders are known for their better flavor, more even grind and their ease of use compared to blade coffee grinders. If you follow this blog, you have likely already read How to Choose a Blade Grinder and A Comparison Between Blade Grinders and Burr Grinders where I talked about how burr grinders are superior to blade grinders.

Coffee lovers all know that a cup of freshly brewed coffee needs to be brewed with freshly ground coffee beans. If ground beans are not used within minutes of grinding, the flavor is very quickly lost. That is why it is really important to have a coffee grinder at home.

Before getting into more detail about grinders, let us look at some basic information regrding different grinding levels.

There are three main grind sizes: course, medium and fine. Turkish grind is also often discussed as a fourth grind size. Course ground coffee has the largest coffee granules while the Turkish grind is the finest.

Apart from espresso, medium grind works well with most coffee makers. For espresso machines, a fine grind is necessary. Course grind is recommended for coffee presses and percolators.

You don’t need to buy an expensive burr coffee grinder with loads of different settings, a simple grinder will do the job. If you are grinding for less than three people, a blade grinder will be fine.

Turkish grind is the finest of the four grinding levels mentioned above and is used with Turkish coffee brewers. Turkish grinding requires a particular type of grinder and generally won’t be achievable with a domestic coffee grinder.

Types of Burr Coffee Grinders

There are 2 types of burr coffee grinders:

  • Flat Burr Coffee Grinder
  • Conical Burr Coffee Grinder
Flat Burr grinder vs Conical Burr grinder

Conical grinders are quite popular right now, but flat burr grinders are also great. With so many makes and models out there, it is difficult to say what type of grinder is better. So here we are not going to compare these two types of grinders, we are just going to list some features of both so that you can buy the grinder that best suits your needs. It really does not matter whether you go for a conical or flat burr grinder as long as you get the grinder that is right for you.

The Speed – there are two standard grinding speeds: high and low, powered by either a high or low speed motor. The price for high speed grinders is similar to that of high-end blade grinders. The motor is smaller than low speed grinder motors. As the motor in these grinders is required to operate at a pretty high rate, some heat may be created and transferred to the beans which isn’t good for optimal coffee extraction and can result in bitter coffee. Low speed grinders produce less heat and are also more quiet. Choose a low speed grinder if your budget allows for it.

Noise level – the quiet the better. Burr grinders are quieter than blade grinders and lower speed grinders are quieter than fast grinders.

The design – there are three points we want to pay attention to when it comes to design: how the grind is adjusted, whether or nor the grinder has a doser and finally, whether or not the design fits with your kitchen decor.

Personally, I prefer stepless grinders (grinders without reference options) as they give complete control over the size of the grind. Stepped burr grinders are good too, as it is easy to remember the exact setting for your coffee grind. This is particularly useful for espresso machine owners.

A doser automatically measures out a portion of ground coffee. Non-dosing grinders are not ideal for espresso but are fine for all the other brewing methods such as a drip coffee or French press.

No matter what kind of Burr Coffee Grinder you choose, there is no need to over-complicate things. A cup of fresh coffee is all we want.

How does the Keurig B70 1 cup coffee maker work?

What is a K-Cup?

k cups

The Keurig 1 cup platinum coffee maker uses a unique, patented type of coffee, tea and cocoa packaging called K-Cups. A K-Cup is a vacuum sealed container of coffee, tea or cocoa, made for single use. The substances in the K-Cup are preserved and protected from the negative effects of air, moisture and light by the vacuum, so you can be sure that your brew will always be delicious and fresh.

The brewing process

After ensuring that the reservoir in your Keurig B70 platinum is full of fresh water and a mug is on the drip tray, just insert your K-Cup into the machine, select the brew size and press the brew button. The Keurig coffee maker then punctures the K-Cup container with two needles and directs hot water through the K-Cup and into your mug, giving you your fresh cup of coffee in less than 60 seconds!

Tea, coffee and cocoa K-Cup options are also available

You can find almost 200 different varieties of K-Cup coffee, tea, and cocoa.

You can also choose from different coffee blend types such as dark, light, medium, decaf, half-half etc.

Green Mountain Coffee and Timothy’s World Coffee offer both tea and cocoa for your Keurig single serve coffee maker, along with numerous other tea and coffee manufacturers.

Want to use your own blend? Use a My K-Cup!

If you can’t find a K-Cup beverage you like, prefer using ground coffee or you simply love that special blend you bought in Costa Rica last summer, there is a solution for you: The Keurig My K-Cup reusable coffee filter.

You can use this filter instead of pre-packaged K-Cups. Place up to two tablespoons of your favorite ground coffee into the mesh metal filter, insert it into the 1 cup coffee maker and enjoy your gourmet coffee! After use, remove and rinse the filter and it is ready to use again.

Bunn NHBX-B Contemporary 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer

If you are ever in need of a 10-cup coffee brewer, you should consider the Bunn NHBX-B Contemporary brewer; especially for occasions like Christmas. This brewer is fast. It will brew plenty of cups quickly for all your family members.

When I say fast, I mean fast. 50-oz of coffee brews in just 3 minutes; that’s amazing. On top of that, the stainless steel tank keeps the water hot for whenever you need it. So how has Bunn delivered such a fast brewer?

Bunn nhbx-b

This is primarily achieved with two water tanks: one you fill, and the other is preheated. The water in the preheated water tank is delivered to the spray head and, because it is preheated, it doesn’t require any time to heat up. Another way that Bunn have achieved fast brewing is by increasing the amount of water that pours into the filter basket, which is a far greater compared to other coffee makers on the market.

If you are looking for a brewer that works perfectly and won’t just last for a six months or a year, but rather for five years at least, then you should choose this Bunn BHBX-B coffee brewer. Bunn builds coffee makers to last, unlike other coffee makers that usually wear out after a year or two. Virtually all programmable coffee makers seem to only last a short time. So, by buying a Bunn, you’ll save money on coffee makers.

If you still need to buy your friend a gift for Christmas, you really need to look no further. Of course, K-Cups are also always a fantastic gift option.

I forget to mention that there is a 3-year limited warranty, so buying this machine is risk free.

A Comparison between Blade Grinders and Burr Grinders

Making a choice between a blade coffee grinder and a burr coffee grinder is not that hard, you just need to know the differences and what it is you’re looking for. For example, what type of brewer do you intend to use? A blade grinder is generally only suited to automatic-drip coffee makers whereas a burr grinder is better for espresso machines, French press or Turkish coffee brewing.

Let’s go into more detail.

Price is something you should consider when buying a grinder

Let’s be realistic; it may not be your first consideration, but the most important factor is going to be PRICE. Generally speaking, you can get a blade grinder for as little as $20, whereas you’ll have to pay at least $80 for a burr.

The flavor is the next factor to consider

When you brew your coffee, the extraction rate of the coffee grounds depends on the size of the granules. When the coffee granules are uniform in size, the extraction will be steady and uniform during the brewing process. A burr grinder produces a very uniform grind due to the space between the grinding surfaces. Coffee beans are fed between the burrs and crushed into uniform grind particles when one of the burrs rotates while the other is stationary.

blade grinder On the other hand, by chopping the beans, the blade grinder is unable to cut the beans into consistently sized pieces or grounds. The result will be relatively large grounds mixed with small grounds. When brewed, the bigger granules will under extract and the smaller granules will be over extracted, leading to bitterness in your coffee.

Besides, the blade also tends to burn the coffee grounds due to the high heat produced during the grinding process. This will also add to bitterness.

Counter space should also be considered

A burr grinder is much bigger than a blade, so assess your counter space when you make your choice. Generally a burr can be 14.6 x 9.6 x 7.8 inches and a blade measures 3.5 x 3 x 6.8 inches.

Grinding spices

If you want to grind spices, the blade grinder is your only choice. A burr grinder is not suitable for this task.

To sum up, if you are not a coffee addict, you want to grind your coffee beans (and sometimes spices) in a fast and easy way, and you want a grinder that is easy to clean, the blade coffee grinder will always be your best choice. If you really are a coffee lover and are looking for a developed coffee flavor, go for burr coffee grinder.
